Untangling People Flow contributing to RecSys 2025

The University of Helsinki’s People Flow research team presented its latest work at RecSys 2025, drawing attention to a critical flaw in the offline evaluation method commonly used in academic recommender system research. Their study highlighted how that method fails to reflect real-world performance. To address this, the team proposed a novel evaluation framework designed to bridge the gap between offline and online settings, offering a more realistic and reliable assessment of recommender system algorithms.

Untangling People Flow contributing to 2025 IEEE World Congress on SERVICE

The University of Helsinki’s People Flow research team made a remarkable contribution to the 2025 IEEE World Congress on SERVICES, held at the university’s main building, by developing an intuitive web app. This app significantly enhanced the experience for over 500 registered guests in downtown Helsinki, offering features like an interactive program, indoor maps, venue locations, and dedicated people flow pages, all designed to ensure seamless navigation throughout the event. Beyond the app, the team was instrumental in the local organization, taking charge of registration and providing general advice to attendees.
